Voyles was a resident of Washington County, Ind., when he enlisted in the 18th Indiana Regiment in 1861. He was mustered out in 1864, studied law in St. Louis, Mo., and returned to Indiana in 1869 where he practiced law, was a state senator, and served as a Circuit Court judge.
